I Am Ruthie Segal, Hear Me Roar’

‘I Am Ruthie Segal, Hear Me Roar’, a 10 minute musical, won one of two UK Jewish Film Festival Short Film Awards in 2009, and is shooting in August. It is will premiere at the Film Festival in November.
'I am Ruthie Segal, Hear Me Roar' is a glimpse of the kind of batmitzvah you would have if you actually chose it for yourself – if you were a 12-year old devotee of 60’s musicals …

Today is Ruthie’s big day. She knows just what she wants and so far, today isn’t it. She’s had enough of her brother’s goading, her mother’s attention to all the wrong things and her bitchy so-called friends. If today is the day for her to become a woman then she’s going to have to shake things up a bit, or these people will be deciding all the important things forever.
Using comedy and satire in a musical format the film tackles the powerlessness and awkwardness of female adolescence with a light and loving touch. It offers an alternative to the frustration of Jewish traditional expectations, celebrating chutzpah and passion.

Ruthie was born of the collective adolescent memories, present day concerns and longtime love for Yentl of The Knish Collective.
